      Get Your Joy Back

      Get Your Joy Back
By Laurie Wallin and Joni Eareckson Tada
      Kregel
      Retail Price $13.99
      Amazon Price: $11.13

      Book Description:

An invitation and a promise for weary Christian parents of special needs kids from a parent who’s been there.“It isn’t the long day of monitoring a child’s precarious health or being hypervigilant about her mood and mental health challenges that weighs parents down; it’s the wishing that things were different. . . . Resentment, not the intense care they must provide their child, is the parents’ greatest stressor and source of pain.” —Laurie WallinParents of specials needs children are exhausted. They’ve done all the research, consulted all the experts, joined support groups, gotten counseling, fought for the best life for their children. Often just caring for their children’s needs and attempting to maintain a home maxes out parents’ mental, emotional, and spiritual reserves.

Laurie Wallin knows firsthand the difficulties of this journey. With Get Your Joy Back, she steps forward to make a bold, audacious claim: in the midst of this long-term, intense task, it is still possible to have an abundant life, full of joy. The key to radically changing daily life and restoring joy to the weary is forgiveness. Wallin gives parents a lifeline to find that restoration, pulling them back to shore when they feel like they’re drowning.

This book is full of practical, biblical insights and strategies to shed the resentments that leave Christian special-needs parents themselves spiritually, emotionally, and socially drained. Wallin meets readers right where they are, sugar coating nothing, but addressing issues with honesty, humor, and–above all–hope.

      Review

One of the hardest things for me to describe about my experiences as the mom of a child with some special needs is how lonely it sometimes feels. It’s weird for me to say this because I have wonderful family and friend support. There is a plethora of people available to hear me and help me, should I need them. But I find it difficult to always adequately express what is bothering me about my 5-year-old daughter with special needs.  Some worries I can’t put into words. Often, there’s no concrete reason for my concern… it’s just a feeling I have.  This often leads to depression or a loss of joy in not only parenting, but life in general.  The author does  a wonderful job of walking beside you, sharing her story, and giving you tips and resources about getting your joy back by giving up the resentment (open or hidden) about your difficult situation.  I found it very encouraging and uplifting and I was able to apply so many things to my own life.

        Global Mom
        By Melissa Dalton-Bradford
        Familius
        Retail Price $17.95
        Amazon Price: $13.73

        Book Description:

After more than twenty years living internationally—sixteen addresses, eight countries and five different  languages—writer Melissa Bradford shares a fantastic journey of motherhood that will inspire any family.

Follow this family of six on their passage—extraordinary, hilarious and heartbreakingly poignant—from Bright Lights (of New York City) to the Northern Lights (of Norway) to the City of Light (Paris) to the speed-of-light of the Autobahn (in Munich).  Continue deep into the tropics of Southeast Asia (Singapore) and end your voyage in the heights of the Swiss Alps (Geneva).

As varied as the topography—the craggy fjords, the meandering Seine, the black forests, the muggy tropics, the soaring Alps—this multicultural tale traverses everything from giving birth in a château in Versailles to living on an island in a fjord. From singing jazz on national Norwegian T.V. to judging an Indonesian beauty contest. From navigating the labyrinth of French bureaucracy and the traffic patterns of Singapore to sitting around a big pine table where the whole family learns languages, cultures, cuisines—where they, in short, learn to love this complex and diverse world and, most importantly, each other.

        Review

The author has lived a life that others only dream of, traveling the globe and raising her family in a variety of interesting, life-enriching settings.  Not that her life has been a picnic.  She has suffered loss, had to endure change, and make a consistent life for her children though her living conditions were anything but consistent.  Due to her situation, Melissa has learned to see her life as an adventure and shares how to live life in the moment.  She encourages the reader to see their lives the same way, no matter where they live, and to make hospitality a way of life.  It was a fantastic read!

              I Have Seen God

              I Have Seen God
              by Klaus-Dieter John
              Monarch Books
              Retail Price $16.99
              Amazon Price: $13.19

              Book Description:

The miraculous founding of a top class hospital for some of the world’s poorest people.  Klaus-Dieter and Martina John–both brilliant, talented, and highly qualified doctors–turned their backs on lucrative careers to follow their dream to open a first-rate medical facility for the Indians of the Peruvian Andes, some of the world’s poorest people. The Peruvian Andes natives suffer appallingly from the diseases of poverty and, although they make up approximately 40 percent of Peru’s population, are ignored by the authorities.Having studied at the universities of Harvard, Yale, and Johannesburg during his training as a surgeon, Dr. Klaus-Dieter John together with his wife, Dr. Martina John, a pediatrician, developed a concept for a modern hospital in the Peruvian Highlands.

Turning down other offers, including a professorship, they set themselves the task of raising the millions of dollars needed. God opened the hearts and consciences of individuals and companies to create not just a health center, but a fully equipped hospital. Their story and vision has captured attention around the world and today they have the backing of 180 corporations and 50,000 private supporters.

The hospital’s name, Diospi Suyana, means “we trust in God” in Quechua, the native language of the people it serves. It is a testament to their experience that with God the impossible can happen. The incredible conviction and profound faith of the Johns will refresh your heart and stir your spirit.

              Review

I love true stories of God working in amazing ways in the lives of His people.  I’ve read several biographies of George Muller and my heart races when I read about how God met the needs for his projects over and over again.  This book  recounts a modern day story of God’s miraculous provision at just the right time in lives of the Doctors John and the hospital they built in the Andes Mountains.  We get a lot of the back story on what brought them to the point of giving up their lucrative medical careers to meet the needs of the poorest of the poor.  Though their story is inspiring, the author does not sugar coat the work and gives us a glimpse at the setbacks and trials they faced as they persevered until their dream came true.  I Have Seen God is must reading for anyone with a desire to know more of the reality and power of a Living God.

                Jesus on Trial

                Jesus on Trial
                by David Limbaugh
                Regnery Publishing
                Retail Price $27.99
                Amazon Price: $17.70

                Book Description:

In Jesus on Trial, David Limbaugh applies his lifetime of legal experience to a unique new undertaking: making a case for the gospels as hard evidence of the life and work of Jesus Christ. Limbaugh, a practicing attorney and former professor of law, approaches the canonical gospels with the same level of scrutiny he would apply to any legal document and asks all the necessary questions about the story of Jesus told through Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. His analysis of the texts becomes profoundly personal as he reflects on his own spiritual and intellectual odyssey from determined skeptic to devout Christian. Ultimately, Limbaugh concludes that the words Christians have treasured for centuries stand up to his exhaustive inquiry—including his examination of historical and religious evidence beyond the gospels—and thereby affirms Christian faith, spirituality, and tradition.

                Review

This is a fantastic book on Apologetics.  The author gives you so much information on defending the gospel, written as only a lawyer can.  He writes from his own perspective, drawing on his personal journey of faith and his research is impeccable and well documented.  This is a book you will want to keep in your personal library to refer to often.  It also makes a great book to study in a small group.  I was very impressed.

This is a fantastic book for both younger and older women alike.  We are often sucked into aligning ourselves with the culture and trying to fit in.  Clinton reminds us that we are called to stand with God, regardless of popular opinion and trend.  If we want to reach others for God, we need to learn who we are, how we are gifted, and where God is calling us to reach others for him.  This was an inspiring call to action for women of all ages.
